Does Luke Skywalker's Necklace In The Last Jedi Reference Darth Vader?

A new rumor from the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi may indicate in Luke Skywalker's direction in the film, giving new insight into his proclamation that the "Jedi must end," and hinting that he may still have a connection to his father.

As reported on Making Star Wars, Luke is sporting a necklace in the film which is described to look like a "dog whistle," though it also prominently features a red crystal in the design. Given the increased prominence of Kyber crystals in the newer installments after Lucasfilm's purchase by Disney, could the red crystal be a source of power in Darth Vader's lightsaber?

Kyber crystals power lightsabers in the Star Wars universe, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story revealed that the Empire was harvesting them to power the destructive beam of the Death Star. 



This information, coupled with Kylo Ren's lightsaber, could indicate that the designs and costumes of Star Wars: The Last Jedi are heavily influenced by previously established lore. Whether or not the movies expand on these storylines remains to be seen and likely won't be revealed until the latest film releases in theaters.

Lucasfilm and Disney confirmed that Kylo Ren's lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens utilizes an ancient design and a flawed Kyber crystal. It's unclear whether the crystal used to belong to the former Anakin Skywalker, but it was clarified that the hilt of the saber was made of vents for the unstable blade.

Could Run be using a portion of Vader's old lightsaber, considering the character tends to covet the Sith Lord's old artifacts? And why would Luke Skywalker be keeping another portion from him?

Perhaps Luke isn't hiding the portion of the Kyber crystal from Kylo Ren, but keeping it for himself to maintain his connection to his father—and as a symbolic gesture that a balance between Light and Dark is necessary for the Universe moving forward.

Hopefully we find out more in the future as the release date for Star Wars: The Last Jedi rapidly approaches.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017 release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
