Star Wars: Mark Hamill On If Luke Is What Obi-Wan Wanted Him To Be

Star Wars fans will be reacquainted with Luke Skywalker later this year when The Last Jedi premieres in December, and according to Mark Hamill, who portrays the iconic character, the older version of Luke will have quite a few regrets.

One of those will reportedly stem from the feeling that Luke didn't honor the legacy of his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness). As Hamill explained to Entertainment Weekly, the Luke audiences will see in The Last Jedi will feel regret about not making his mentor proud.

"I think he probably looks out on the horizon," Hamill revealed, "and wishes that he could be more effective, could be what Obi-Wan wanted him to be."

With the hero enduring plenty of conflict since Return of the Jedi - including the betrayal of his nephew and prodigy, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) - Hamill argued that Luke has grown to see the world a little bit differently.

"Life is imperfect and without conflict there is no drama," Hamill explained. "Believe me, you're going to see a lot of conflict in The Last Jedi. That is for sure."

With early rumors hinting at Luke going up against both Kylo and Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), and even butting heads a little with Rey (Daisy Ridley), Hamill's comment certainly rings true. Whether fans will see Luke embody the essence of his one-time mentor or see him go down a much darker path remains to be seen.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters December 15th.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.
