Star Wars: The Last Jedi Blurs The Lines of Good and Evil

Time and time again, protagonists in the Star Wars saga have defied expectations and surprised audiences with the decisions they make. Whether it be Anakin becoming Darth Vader or Ben becoming Kylo Ren, the difference between good and evil can be a slippery slope, a trend that will continue in The Last Jedi.

When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Daisy Ridley explained, "What's wonderful is it's not so cut and dry, who's good and who's bad and that's not me saying, 'Oh, my God, some people are gonna go bad,'"

She adds, "There's always room for bad people to make good decisions and vice versa. Again, that could be nothing to do with your parents and it could be everything to do with your parents."

In The Force Awakens, Rey embraced the light side of the Force while waging battle with Kylo, who had embraced his inner darkness, but based on Ridley's comments, it's possible these distinctions could begin to shift. Additionally, this could also expose audiences to a Luke Skywalker who has turned his back on being a Jedi, becoming a much more neutral wielder of the Force.

Upon killing his father, Kylo Ren seemingly reached his ultimate destination, turning his back on his family and destroying his past. It's possible that, when embracing the reality of these ramifications, he could potentially regret his actions and question his beliefs.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Rey could allow her anger towards Kylo fester and grow into anger and hatred for the Sith, leading her down a darker path, similarly to the one Luke almost went down in The Empire Strikes Back.

We'll learn more about the conflicts between good and evil when The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.
