FTWD: Dayton Callie Explains Jeremiah's Dark Past And Light Heart

Fear the Walking Dead introduced a slew of interesting new characters with its third season. Right out of the gate, fans and characters met the Otto family, consisting of brothers Jake and Troy, with their father Jeremiah never too far away.

Many fans are skeptical of whether or not they can trust this family. One of the brothers appears to be killing for sport while the other takes representing humanity to the extreme. As the siblings operate on opposite sides of the spectrum, their father looks away and allows them to operate as they see fit. Between the kids, though, it appears like both halves of Jeremiah are being represented by their perspectives as the father blends both a dark past with a seemingly genuine desire to help people.

Speaking to Jeremiah actor Dayton Callie, ComicBook.com learned what it is which makes the character act as he does.

"I think he was an alcoholic, for one," Callie said. "So, I guess he had some demons. I think we all do. You mix a few of yours with his and you come up with a character."

In fact, Jeremiah would not be an advocate for Troy's horrific actions fans witnessed in the Season 3 premiere, which consisted of killing people and timing how long it took for them to reanimate.

"Jeremiah doesn't know everything, the details," Callie said. "Jake might've said, 'Troy was acting up, took a little control', but I don't think Jeremiah gets the depths of Troy's destruction. So, a lot of times, you don't look, especially if it's your family, then you overlook. 'All right, well he's just a little loose cannon.'"

It all comes down to being a parent.

"It isn't until like one day they're put in front of the firing squad and somebody says all the things they did and didn't and all the victims come up that you find out that, 'Wow, it was worse than I thought,'" Callie said. "Sometimes I think parents, well not sometimes, most of the time they overlook a lot of s---. They think it ain't as bad as it might seem or being told, if your brother is exaggerating a little bit. I think he doesn't know the extent of Troy's destruction. Then he feels bad about certain things, he feels like I feel bad that I've been kind of hard on him. Growing up I was pretty hard on my kids and so just a little bit of trying to spare the rod now."

Jeremiah and his sons will only continue to grow within the world of Fear the Walking Dead in Sunday's new "Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame" episode. Troy will be sent out on a mission with Madison while Jake continues to develop a relationship with Alicia and lead back home. Jeremiah, in the mean time, will finally get some of the new members of the community to open up to him by doing just that.

Perhaps Callie's perspective will finally influence the skeptics to come around with his character.
