Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, which stars Bradley Cooper as the most lethal marksman in the history of the United States military, has become the 2014 domestic box office champion! It is the first time since 2000's The Grinch that a non-franchise film topped the domestic box office.
In its eleventh week at the box office, American Sniper added $4.5M to its domestic total, which now stands at $337.2M. On Friday, it earned $1.142M, which pushed it past Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ($333.1M) and by the time the weekend is complete American Sniper will have passed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, which had the 2014 North American box office record with $336.9M.
International box office totals are a whole other ballgame. Guardians of the Galaxy grossed $441M, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 earned $414.9M and American Sniper is far behind those two with $140.3M in overseas earnings.
