How Closely Will Attack On Titan Season 2 Stick To The Original Manga?

It's time to break out your cosplays, Survey Corps Scouts! Kodansha Comics and Funimation have finally released the first teaser trailer for Season 2 of Attack On Titan, and the action-packed footage proves to fans the wait was worth it. The 2-minute promo shows fans that Eren Yeager and his comrades in the 104th Training Corps are about to head back into war against the Titans. For manga readers, much of the trailer will look familiar as it is sourced straight from the original Attack On Titan manga - but how closely should fans expect the anime to follow its predecessor?

Well, if history is anything to go by, then Season 2 will be very canon-compliant to the original manga. So, of course, spoilers!

So far, fans know that Season 2 will cover the 'Clash of the Titans' arc from the manga. As the fifth story arc, the plot follows the Survey Corps after Wall Rose is breached by a slew of Titans. The soldiers must fight back against the horde of mindless creatures, but they find themselves stopped at every avenue thanks to the Armored and Colossus Titans.

Soon enough, the 104th Training Corps learn something wholly shocking about the pair. Reiner and Bertolt are Titan Shifters who turn into the respective beasts, and they kidnap Eren Yeager with the help of Ymir who reveals herself to be an ancient shifter. The arc ends with Eren freed thanks to the efforts of the Survey Corps, but the hero has learned the Titans are more dangerous than he ever imagined. No longer does he see them as mindless pawns; He sees them as political bargaining chips.

Right now, it is not clear whether Season 2 will delve into the sixth story arc of Attack On Titan. 'The Uprising' spends time on the political turmoil of Paradis after Minister Nick is murdered in cold blood. Shortly after, Eren and Historia Reiss are nearly kidnapped by unknown forces, but the military soon learns the attempt is connected to the monarchy's fear of exposure. The royal family has secretly been using the Titans as pawns to keep control over humanity's vestiges, and the military wants to overthrow the government with a coup to seat Historia on the throne.

When it comes to Attack On Titan, the show has been very compliant with the manga thus far. In fact, Season 2 was initially delayed in order for the manga to expand and give animators more content to drawn from. If the new episodes don't rely heavily on the critically acclaimed manga, fans will no doubt be stunned.

If you are not familiar with Attack On Titan, then you should know the popular anime is renowned for its intense action and gritty storylines. The anime follows a boy named Eren Yeager in an alternate world overrun by massive creatures known as Titans. These mindless beasts have all but wiped out humanity, and mankind is left to cower in fear behind massive walls. When their sanctum is infiltrated by a slew of Titans, Eren and his friends Armin and Mikasa join the military to help eradicate the blood-thirty monsters. But, as they grow older, they learn that the beasts are not what they appear as long-held government conspiracies make themselves known.

Since Attack On Titan first season wrapped, the series has become an international hit amongst audiences. The first 25-episode season debuted in 2013 and can be streamed online at sights like Hulu. As fans waited for a second season to come around, Attack On Titan has been busy expanding itself into a full-on franchise. The manga has since been adapted into various side manga series, light novels, and even live-action films. In Japan, the first of two films based on the post-apocalyptic series debuted in July 2015 with the second following in September.

Attack On Titan Season 2 will debut in April 2017.
