Remembering Leonard Nimoy On His Birthday

03/26/2015 12:00 am EDT

Today is the late Leonard Nimoy's birthday.

Nimoy, who famously portrayed Mr. Spock in the Star Trek franchise, tragically passed away on February 27. Nimoy had faced a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which ultimately took his life.

Though gone, Nimoy's memory as a talented actor and performer lives on. Nimoy first played Mr. Spock in the original NBC Star Trek series from 1967 to 1969, before reprising the character in six separate Star Trek films. He would also assume the role decades later, when he played an older version of Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot franchise.

Outside of the Star Trek universe, Nimoy held memorable cameos on the Simpsons, voice-acted for the popular Kingdom Hearts video game, and held a recurring role on the science fiction series Fringe.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Nimoy would have turned 84 today. Happy Birthday, Leonard Nimoy.
