Riverdale's Ashleigh Murray Praises Archie's New Josie & the Pussycats Series

Ashleigh Murray, who plays Josie McCoy on Riverdale, isn't a regular comic book reader at the moment -- "It's hard enough for me to keep up with what we're doing on the show. I haven't had much time to read anything," she told ComicBook.com during a visit to the Riverdale set this week -- but she's a big fan of the current creative approach to Archie Comics's Josie and the Pussycats.

The series, which launched back in September from writer Marguerite Bennett and Cameron DeOrdio with artist Audrey Mok, is very different from the way the characters are depicted on Riverdale, but Murray was excited to read it after seeing how much she finds herself on the same wavelength with their approach to the character of Josie.

"I'm a huge admirer of them," Murray said of the current creative team on the comics. "I read their interviews about the launch of the comic and it really put me at ease. Everything that they believe and see Josie to be is exactly what I've been saying about her myself. It gives me peace of mind that how I view her and how I believe her to be and the role model that I think she is and can continue to be for a lot of young people is represented right on the money."

In the TV series, of course, Josie and her band are still in Riverdale, making a name for themselves, and pushing back a bit against Archie's encroachment on their "turf" as he gets more and more into music.

In the comics, Josie, Melody, and Valerie have already left Riverdale to pursue global stardom, a dream that brings with it plenty of globe-hopping adventures and a little crime-solving, not unlike the '70s cartoon or the 2001 movie. The series also retains the original racial makeup -- two white Pussycats and one black -- of the comics and cartoons, as opposed to the band on Riverdale, where as this past week's episode said, part of the "Pussycat" branding is the idea that the three women of color in the band have to "claw their way in" to rooms that other people can simply walk into.

Despite those differences, Murray asked us, "Is there something that is happening there that we should do on the show?"

For their part, when we talked to Bennett and DeOrdio this summer, they admitted that they hadn't considered changing the look and style of the band to match the TV show...then kicked themselves later when they realized they could have.
