These days, there are few film franchises who have the kind of appeal like the DC Cinematic Universe. While films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were suspiciously looked upon by fans, films like Justice League and even Ben Affleck's Batman film are climbing fans' lists of most anticipated movies. Over the past few months, various details about the standalone Batman movie have been shared with fans, and now Affleck is giving an update on the project himself.

Tonight, Affleck took time to speak with the New York Times about his career and future projects. Of course, Batman made an appearance, and Affleck said he was still finishing the screenplay for the project.

"I'm a real believer in not reverse engineering projects to meet a window or a date. So, that's what we're doing," he explained after telling fans he was still getting the script together.

Affleck continued to say he wanted to take time in order to pay homage to Batman's cinematic history. Nodding to creators like Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan, Affleck said he wanted to direct a "good" and "iconic" Batman movie befitting of the hero's reputation.

"I'm really mindful of that," he told the crowd. "I'm not in any hurry to jam a mediocre film down the pipe."

The next time fans see Affleck suit up as Batman, it will be in Justice League. The ensemble flick will hit theaters next year and see characters like Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Flash team up with the Gotham icon. The star is set to reprise the role in Justice League 2, but the sequel has had its release date pushed back. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been delayed to accommodate Affleck's Batman movie.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg.
