DC Reveals First Look At Duke's New Costume, Finally Gets A Superhero Name

Batman is trying something different with his apprentice Duke, and it definitely shows in his new costume and title.

Artist Cully Hammer handled the redesign duties on Duke's new duds, and the new artwork shows why Batman has constantly referred to him as "something different" than the Robins everyone is used to. The costume is a tweaking of his current yellow and blue threads, but now he's got a Batman-styled utility belt, an angled cowl, and a Bat symbol similar to Batman's. The catch? It's all white with a black outline, going hand in hand with Duke's new title (via Bleeding Cool).

Which is The Signal, and Duke will be the very opposite of Batman in his new series. A protector by day instead of by night. Batman has always preferred the shadows, but The Signal is something different altogether, especially since in The Casting it was revealed that he is indeed a Metahuman, and has already displayed some of his impressive abilities.

The new series will be helmed by Tony Patrick and Scott Snyder, spinning right out of the upcoming DC Metal series. It's something Snyder has had in the works for some time.

"I've been planning METAL for as long as I've been writing Batman," Snyder said, "but I want METAL to be built upon the stories happening now in Rebirth. Most of all we want to create new material that feels really modern and different. And above all, it's going to be fun. Even with terror and nightmares, it won't be grim. DARK NIGHTS: METAL will be celebratory, huge and crazy."

Dark Nights: Metal #1 is written by Scott Snyder with art by Jonathan Glapion and Greg Capullo. The official description is below:

DARK NIGHTS: METAL is a DC event unlike any other—one that will push Batman, Superman and heroes of the Justice League beyond their limits to take on threats unlike any our world has ever seen! It will take the combined might of the World's Greatest Heroes as you've never seen them before to face what's coming their way!

Dark Nights: Metal #1 hits stores on August 16, 2017.
