Nightwing Director Reveals Why He Wants The Hero To Get A Solo Movie

If you have been living in the BatCave for the past week, then you may have missed some big Batman news. Not long ago, reports surfaced that Warner Bros. is looking to expand the DC Extended Universe in a big way. A standalone Nightwing film is being looked into by Chris McKay, the director of The LEGO Batman Movie. After the news broke, fans from around the world were quick to celebrate the attention Dick Grayson was finally receiving. And, now, the McKay is speaking out on why he thinks a solo film for the hero is a must-have.

Recently, McKay continued promotions for his latest Batman venture on the Shanlian Batman podcast, and it was there that the director compared Nightwing to Bruce Wayne's Batman.

According to the director, Wayne is bogged down by the privileges of his life, and they make him more "dour and angry." As for Grayson, the character avoids that sort of chic behavior because of his upbringing as a circus performer.

"They're people who live hand-to-mouth and that's something that informs him and his attitude," McKay explained. The director also noted that "all the same things happen" to Grayson which Wayne went through since both men had their families die rather tragically.

When it comes down to it, McKay sees Grayson as a person with the same pitfalls as Wayne, but the younger hero carries his vigilante duties with a very different outlook on the world.

"He's a fascinating guy to me because he had all the same things happen to him. He's got some of the same negatives as Bruce Wayne and then from a society standpoint - obviously he was adopted into Bruce Wayne's life - but he didn't start that way. He's this guy who has all these negatives and then even more negatives and yet he remains. Those are things why I like Dick Grayson, why I like the idea of Nightwing as a movie," McKay explained.

If you are not familiar Nightwing, then you do have a bit to catch up on. After all, the character was introduced to the world way back in April 1940. Nightwing, whose real name is Dick Grayson, is the original Robin to DC Comics' Batman. The hero was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and Grayson grew up as Bruce Wayne's ward. He then went on to become Robin when Batman came into being, and the crime-fighting duo took to Gotham to weed out crime. As he grew older, Grayson took a leadership position within the Teen Titans team before he went solo under the name Nightwing to assert his own independence.
