Shazam! Will Be The DCEU's Most Light-Hearted Movie Yet

The DC Extended Universe is set to develop even further with Shazam, which was first announced last month. When it does, David F. Sandberg, best known for horror films such as Lights Out and this week's Annabelle: Creation, will be at the helm.

But contrary to his previous filmography, Sandberg is set to bring a much more upbeat sensibility to Shazam. During a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, Sandberg teased that the film could be the most light-hearted DCEU output yet.

"In terms of what people can expect," Sandberg explained. "I think this will be one of the more fun or light-hearted movies so far in the DC universe. It certainly will be a departure."

Given the film's main character - 10-year-old Billy Batson, who can transform into a grown-up superhero - that tone was certainly expected by some. But according to Sandberg, the film will also bring a sense of consciousness about Billy's position within the larger DCEU.

"The big attraction for me with that character is the fact that every kid dreams of being Superman, right? I mean I certainly did, and (Billy Batson) is a kid that gets that chance. He gets to become the superhero. So, it'll be big with superpowers in a way."

Shazam is currently projected for a April 5th, 2019 release date. The cast for the film has yet to be announced, although actors such as Armie Hammer have been suggested amongst fans.

There's no official synopsis for Shazam! or Black Adam, but here's what Johnson had to say about the latter film over on Instagram:

"Had a very cool and strategic meeting with the heads of DC about their entire universe. As a hard core DC fan, to get a real sense of the tonal shifts and developments coming in these future movies has me fired up. Something we, as DC fans have all been waiting for for a very long time. Hope, optimism & FUN. Even when talking about the the most ruthless villain/anti-hero of all time finally coming to life. Prepare yourselves DC Universe."
