Warner Bros. Aiming To Film Suicide Squad 2 In Spring 2018

Last year, Suicide Squad burst into theaters with villains like Harley Quinn and Deadshot on its tail. The film may have garnered mixed reviews all around, but Warner Bros. wants to give the team another shot at glory. The studio is moving forward with its planned Suicide Squad sequel, and the movie may head into production sooner than anyone expected.

Not long ago, Variety released a new report updating fans about the status of the sequel's director. The site reiterated news that Jaume Collet-Serra is being eyed to direct the movie after previous frontrunner Mel Gibson passed on the feature. And, according to the site, it looks like insiders predict the movie will begin production come spring.

"Insiders say the studio would love to be up and running by March," Variety reports.

Of course, this is not the first time fans have heard about the studio's ambitious plans. Joel Kinnaman teased the film's production schedule back in June during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked about Suicide Squad 2, Kinnaman said, "As far as I know they're writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I'll definitely come back for it."

Kinnaman also shares a few thoughts about the film's director search. The actor admitted he'd love for David Ayer to return and oversee the sequel, but Kinnaman understands the director will be busy with Gotham City Sirens moving forward.

"Ultimately, I'd love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn't want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that's able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation," Kinnaman said. "It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well."

Written and directed by David Ayer, the film starred Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis. The cast also included Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut.
