Supergirl Showrunner: We're as Committed to Sanvers As the Audience Is

For its second season, Supergirl jumped networks from CBS to the CW, but that isn't the only big change the series has seen.

Supergirl Season 2 introduced Maggie Sawyer, a police officer with a special interest in superhero-related crimes, played by Floriana Lima. In the DC Comics Universe, Sawyer is a gay character who had a long relationship Kate Kane, the Batwoman.

Naturally, there was some speculation when the casting broke about whether Maggie would find love on Supergirl. Turns out that speculation was onto something. Supergirl's sister, Alex, also revealed that she was gay when she entered a relationship with Maggie.

Fans have been quite smitten with the Sawyer-Danvers relationship, which they've dubbed "Sanvers," but how committed are those working on Supergirl behind-the-scenes? Executive producer Alex Kreisberg does not promise that things will be easy for the new couple, but he says Supergirl is all-in with the relationship just as much as the fans are.

"The important thing is that we're committed to this relationship and we're committed to seeing it grow, change, blossom, and struggle, but also get stronger, deeper and more loving as we go forward," Kreisberg told EW. "I don't think people need to worry that suddenly this relationship is going to go by the wayside. It's going to have it's ups and downs, but we're committed to Alex and Maggie — we're as committed to Alex and Maggie as the audience is."

Supergirl will return to the CW on Jan. 23, 2017, with the Kevin Smith-directed midseason premiere, titled "Supergirl Lives."
