CW Says No Plans For Wonder Woman Prequel Amazon

Prior to Wonder Woman's monumental success in theaters, The CW was working to bring the hero to the small screen. After the film, that is no longer the case.

The CW has put the prequel series on ice, saying they have no plans to redevelop it (via Jarett Wieselman) at the Television Critics Association event. For those who don't remember, the show was called Amazon and was essentially Wonder Woman's version of Smallville or Gotham.

The show was sidelined back in 2014, but later seemed like it might get another chance at life. But with Wonder Woman's box office success, there's seemingly no need for a prequel since the film worked in the character's origin so succinctly. Warner Bros. is all about moving forward with their new franchise, and The CW has plenty of other DC properties on its plate.

Amazon was originally developed by Allan Heinberg (who also took part in the Wonder Woman movie), but he stepped down. It was then taken on by Alon Eli Coleite (Heroes), but nothing much seemed to come from that partnership before it was pushed aside.

Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action-adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and is written by Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).

Wonder Woman is in theaters now and will be on home video soon. It's followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Wonder Woman 2 on December 13, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
