Horizon Zero Dawn Devs Are Heavily Investing In Their Amazing Decima Graphics Engine

Horizon Zero Dawn may be the most visually-impressive game made to date. Oh, sure, there are a few PC games that look more technically impressive with the settings cranked all the way up, but Horizon achieved a near-flawless presentation on basic PS4 hardware – that's an impressive achievement. Those amazing Horizon visuals are the work of Guerrilla Games' cutting-edge Decima Engine, and the studio promises this is only the beginning.

According to Guerrilla Game's managing director Hermen Hulst, the Decima Engine will be a major focus for the studio going forward…

"Technology has always been one of our key strengths. It's Michiel van der Leeuw's, our technical director's, brain child. Decima builds on the legacy of Guerrilla. It dates back to the late '90s when Michiel wrote his first code. It's always been very central, but I would argue that the biggest leap that our technology has undertaken has been with the rebranding of our technology into Decima.

And that was all on the back of the incredible challenge to go open-world and to make it ready for Horizon Zero Dawn. It was a tremendous challenge for Michiel's team and the progress they've made has been fantastic. It's something that we're investing in heavily and it's very important to the studio."

It seems like Decima may be on track to become Sony's "house engine," similar to the Frostbite Engine for EA or the Snowdrop Engine for Ubisoft. In addition to future Guerrilla games, Decima is also being used for Kojima Productions' Death Stranding, which is sure to be a gorgeous game. What might the engine be used for next? I'm looking forward to a really bleeding-edge PaRappa the Rapper sequel.

Horizon Zero Dawn is available on PS4. The game's first expansion, The Frozen Wilds, arrives on November 7.
