At E3 2017 Sony and Capcom surprised fans by dropping a Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite story demo – unfortunately, reaction to the demo has been somewhat mixed. While some folks have been enjoying the Marvel vs. Capcom action, the game has been criticized for ugly character models, and a "story" that seems to be little more than a bunch of disconnected one-liners.

Some models, like Chun-Li, look so wonky rumors have spread Marvel is insisting Capcom characters be uglified so their heroes look better in comparison. That seems a little far-fetched, but something has definitely gone awry with the visuals. In a recent interview with GameSpot, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite producers Pete Rosas and Michael Evans explained the new visual style, and promised to get to the bottom of whatever's going on with Chun-Li's poor face.

"It's interesting to see the feedback on [the visuals]. That feedback is coming and we're hearing that feedback and we're taking it in stride and figuring out how we can improve on things. That said, the game comes out in three months so there's gonna be things that we can do in that time remaining and things that we can't do.

The decision to go the cinematic direction -- we had a couple reasons why we wanted to do that. One was, at a glance when you see this game, you want to know that it's Infinite and it's not Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 or any other previous iteration of it. When MvC 3 came out, the Marvel Cinematic Universe really hadn't started, so the first Avengers movie hadn't come out. The recognition of the Marvel characters [is higher now]. I think most people recognize these characters [based on what] they see on screen.

Of course, we will look at [Chun-Li's face] again. We're gonna look at it. Can't promise anything right now, but we want to make our fans happy, man. We're not an evil overlord company, despite the rumors. We do want to make our fans happy. Can't promise anything. We'll look into it. I believe Ono already said something about that."

The producers also addressed Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's story, saying they think it will compare well to Injustice 2's excellent yarn…

"I have played everything this year including Tekken 7, which just came out, and like you mentioned, Injustice 2. I feel really good about our Story mode. It is bonkers, man. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the story that [NetherRealm is] telling also, which is a little more dark and serious and stuff. But there's just these crossover opportunities in Infinite that can be so bonkers. It's not that the whole game is just quips and one-liners like that. There is a very nice story arc that takes you through an epic story and to the conclusion."

Injustice 2 sets the story bar pretty high, so hopefully Rosas and Evans aren't just covering their butts. You've got some big expectations to meet, Capcom!

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite rumbles onto PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on September 19.
