For a game that was initially considered a commercial failure, Okami sure has seen its share of re-releases. Since its 2006 PS2 launch, Okami has been remade for the Wii, remastered in HD for the PS3, and now it seems Capcom's action-adventure classic could be on its way to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

According to Kotaku's UK branch, two separate European retail chains have added Okami HD to their unpublicized internal release calendars. Kotaku is mum on which retailers we're dealing with, but they do mention they're from "different parts of the EU." This new version of Okami would get a physical release, which is significant, as the PS3 version of the game was download-only.

According to Kotaku, Capcom is "dodging their calls and emails" regarding Okami HD, so don't expect a confirmation right away. Capcom will be at this month's European Gamescom event, so perhaps we'll get an official Okami reveal then.

For those who have never played Okami, the game was the brainchild of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya. Based on Japanese myth and history, you play as sun goddess Okami Amaterasu, who takes the form of a fiery white wolf. The game features a beautiful hand-painted visual style, and solving puzzles often requires you to use the "Celestial Brush" to paint various shapes on the screen. Unfortunately, the game was ahead of its time, selling under 500,000 units on the PS2. The failure of Okami caused a rift between Capcom and Kamiya and some of the publisher's other top creators, who went on to form Platinum Games. So yeah, even if it wasn't an initial success, Okami has left a long legacy.

Okami HD is reportedly scheduled for a December 12, 2017 release date (or, at least it is Europe). Hopefully Capcom gives fans an early Christmas present and confirms the date, soon.
