This summer was a great season for sharks in a variety of ways, one of which being the shark-based thriller, 47 Meters Down, becoming a hit. The film's success resulted in the announcement of a sequel, 48 Meters Down, which was just revealed to be hitting theaters on June 28, 2019.

48 Meters Down takes place in Brazil with five young women from different backgrounds and countries united by their lust for life and adventure in the coastal metropolis of Recife. In an attempt to get off the tourist trail, they decide to explore a hidden underwater ruin but the caves where the forgotten city lies are inhabited by the deadliest shark species in the ocean.

In the original film, two sisters venture into shark-infested waters to go cage diving in hopes of seeing the incredible animals, only for a mechanical failure to cause their cage to plummet to the bottom of the ocean, with nothing but water and sharks between them and their safety.

At first glance, the original film's trailer made it appear as though it was an imitation of the 2016 Blake Lively-starring shark thriller The Shallows, in which the actress played a character stranded on a rock just off a beach that was being stalked by a massive shark. In reality, 47 Meters Down was filmed before The Shallows' release, with that film's success allowing director Johannes Roberts to spend more time to perfect 47 Meters Down.

"We are so pleased by the huge success of 47 Meters Down; it totally exceeded all expectations," James Harris of The Fyzz Facility, the studio producing the sequel, explained. "48 Meters Down will take the claustrophobia of cave diving and the thrill of shark encounters and move everything to the next level."

"47 Meters Down has captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, and we're thrilled to be reteaming with the filmmakers and our friends at The Fyzz for the sequel, which will ratchet up the thrills and spills to a whole new level," Mike Runagall of Altitude Film Sales added.

Roberts is slated to return to write and direct 48 Meters Down. His next film, Strangers: Prey at Night, will hit theaters on March 9, 2018.
