Agents Of SHIELD: Jason O'Mara Teases Director Mace's Origin

Agents of SHIELD returns from midseason hiatus tonight to begin the new "LMD" storyline, but Aida's sentience and May being replaced by a life model decoy aren't the only lingering plot threads that need to be addressed.

Jeffrey Mace is the current director of SHIELD. He was chosen for the role, at least partly, because he's and Inhuman with enhanced abilities, but not everyone loves the idea of putting an Inhuman in a position of power.

"It might not sit well with some people, but I think at this point Mace is like, 'Hey, deal with it. I'm and Inhuman. That's who I am, and I'm not going to apologize for it. That's my truth, and deal with it,'" Jason O'Mara, who plays Mace, told ComicBook.com. "I think that that's admirable. I also believe that he has a lot of respect for other Inhumans and anyone else who might feel different from the norm, and I think that's got to be a good thing."

However, Agents of SHIELD has already hinted that there may be more to Mace than what has already been revealed.

"But at the same time, there's all this mystery surrounding his backstory and who he is and how he got to where he is and if he did go through Terrigenesesis, when did that happen? How long as had his powers? Has he ever used them before? All these things need to be answered," O'Mara says.

Mace may have empathy and concern for other Inhumans, but his relationship with Daisy "Quake" Johnson can be described as tense at best.

"Mace has a real problem with Daisy in that she's been fraternizing with Robbie Reyes, who's a known fugitive, terrorist, murderer. You can't go up gang members in prison and burn them to death and barbecue them. Senator Nadeer played Parminder Nagra, knows this and is exploiting this to its fullest, so Mace is in a lot of hot water when it comes to Robbie Reyes and, by association, also by Daisy."
