Does Black Panther Have a Captain America Surprise Cameo?

Marvel's Black Panther is currently heating up the Internet, setting new viewing records along the way. However, while Marvel fans were almost universally impressed with Creed director Ryan Coogler's vision of T'Challa/Black Panther's world of Wakanda, the trailer also did a great job of sewing in some important Easter egg teases of what the movie will be all about - and perhaps some surprises that will be revealed.

In the case of the latter: the fine folks over at New Rockstars did a recent Black Panther trailer breakdown, and found the possible tease of a big cameo in film, from none other than Steve Roger/Captain America.

The possible hint of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers appearing in the film comes with the scene where T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and his personal guard Okoye (Danai Gurira) are observing Everett K. Ross' (Martin Freeman) interrogation of Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis). In the background of the shot is a television screen, which seems to depict a news report about Stever Rogers/Captain America, who we know is considered to be on the run (after the events of Civil War) when Black Panther takes place.

We know from films like Thor: Ragnarok or Spider-Man: Homecoming that Captain America that Evans' Captain America can pop up in all kinds of fun Marvel Cinematic Universe cameo appearances, which aren't directly related to the events of the film. So, Black Panther could be doing the same, but given the connection between T'Challa and Steve Rogers, it could also be something more substantive.

If Wakanda comes under attack during the events of Black Panther (by Serkis' Klaw), then Captain America would have a vested interest in joining Black Panther in that fight. After all, Steve's best friend Bucky is still being hidden in Wakanda, in cryogenic freeze until his Winter Soldier programming can be fully erased.

We won't know for sure if Cap is going to show up until the movie comes out - but for now, it's fun to speculate!

SYNOPSIS: After the events of Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, King T'Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country's new leader. However, T'Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakanadan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

The film stars Chadwick Boseman (Get on Up), Michael B. Jordan (Creed), Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Martin Freeman (Sherlock), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), with Angela Bassett (American Horror Story), with Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and Andy Serkis (Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Additional cast members include Letitia Wright (Urban Hymn), Winston Duke (Modern Family), Florence Kasumba (Emerald City), Sterling K. Brown (The People v. O.J. Simpson) and John Kani (Coriolanus). Ryan Coogler directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
