Kevin Feige Teases The Meaning Behind Captain Marvel's Retro Setting

Marvel might not have delivered any footage of Captain Marvel, but they did share some intriguing details about the project, including the 1990's setting and main villain.

Actually, that should be villains plural, as during the Marvel panel at Comic-Con Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige teased one word, Skrulls. Feige told IGN afterward "This might be the one room in the world where I can say this word and they might go crazy and they did," (via Heroic Hollywood).

Up till this point, the Skrulls have been untouched in the MCU, with many not realizing that they could even use them thanks to their contracts with FOX. While certain characters are off limits, the majority of Skrulls are up for grabs and are ready to give Captain Marvel an identity of its own.

"There's an entire section of the comics that deals with the Kree-Skrull war and we haven't tapped into that at all," Feige. "We thought that be an amazing, huge portion of mythology to belong to Captain Marvel"

When Feige was asked about the 1990's setting specifically he said "The answer to that is even more spoilers, but the easy answer is we thought it would be a fun time period to make a film in," Feige said. "I graduated high school in 1991 and I'm now about to make a period piece set in that era — it makes me feel very old."

Thanks to the film's setting, Nick Fury will be a significant character in Captain Marvel. When pressed on why they chose him for this film Feige said "There are very particular answers to that question, but again the easy answer is we thought it'd be fun. We love Sam, we love that character. It would be fun to see what he was like in his earlier days."

Marvel brought on directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, responsible for Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind. Now that directors are in place and the lead star is already hitting the ground running, more casting news should soon follow.

Captain Marvel currently has a 3.70 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming are both in theaters now, and will be followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
