Kree-Skrull War Confirmed For Captain Marvel Movie

Galactic war is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this time we're not talking about Thanos.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirms that the classic Avengers comic book tale "The Kree-Skrull War" is part of the inspiration for the Captain Marvel movie.

"There's an entire section of our comics that deal with the Kree-Skrull War and we haven't tapped into that at and we thought that would be an amazing, huge portion of mythology to belong to Captain Marvel," Feige tells IGN.

Feige notes that the Skrulls have been conspicuously absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and even more so if they made contact with Carol Danvers, an Earthling, decades ago.

"Captain Marvel will be our twenty-first film in the cinematic universe," Feige noted, "and we've never seen the Skrulls. How come?"

There could be a few answers to that question. One is simply that Captain Marvel beat them so badly they left Earth's orbit and never showed their faces again.

However, the more interesting answer is that they never left at all. The Skrulls are shapeshifters, after all, and there was an entire Marvel Comics event titled Secret Invasion that revealed Skrulls had secretly infiltrated the ranks of Earth's most powerful organizations, including SHIELD and Earth's superhero community, years earlier.

The "Kree-Skrull War" was written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Sal Buscema, John Buscema, and Neal Adams in the pages of Avengers from 1971 into 1972. The story saw the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, and the Avengers defending the Earth as it was nearly drawn into the long-ongoing war between the Skrull and Kree Empires.

The Kree have been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe previously. Ronan, the villain from Guardians of the Galaxy, was a Kree fanatic. The Kree have also appeared on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD when the series was exploring the history of the Inhumans, who were created to fight in one of the Kree Empire's wars. Whether this was the war against the Skrulls is unknown.

Captain Marvel will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, from a script by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Brie Larson will star as Carol Danvers and Nick Fury will reprise his role as Nick Fury.

Captain Marvel is scheduled to open in theaters on Nov. 2, 2018.
