#GrootDanceBomb Challenge Uses Guardians of the Galaxy Character to Plant Trees

04/20/2017 05:26 pm EDT

Following the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, numerous environmental groups and causes rallied behind Groot, the film's lovable talking tree-man, as a kind of mascot.

With a second movie coming to theaters soon, Marvel and Disney have got in on the action. Teaming with YouTube dance sensation Dominic Sandoval (aka D-trix), the companies announced a new initiative where by liking or sharing the video above, or by posting your own on social media using the #GrootDanceBomb hashtag, you can help the Disney Conservation Fund and the Nature Conservancy.

Its simple: The video you post should include you doing a Groot-inspired dance around unsuspecting folks -- "photobombing" them, even though it's video but whatever -- and the #GrootDanceBomb hashtag.

As part of the campaign, Marvel will help plant trees through those two organizations. It will donate one tree - up to 250,000 - for every Facebook, Instagram or Twitter share of the #GrootDancebomb launch video. Fans can also post their own #GrootDancebomb moments, or use one of the dancing Groot toys to pull off the prank, with every new video post using the hashtag helping to reach the tree planting goal.

"Groot was one of the break-out characters from Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy, and has quickly become a fan favorite," said Josh Silverman, Executive Vice President, Global Licensing, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. "As we launch the toy line for the new movie, we're excited to share the #GrootDancebomb challenge combining a little bit of fun and a little bit of doing good — just like the Guardians themselves."

Fans watching Marvel's #GrootDancebomb video will also be treated to D-trix's signature dance style interspersed with Easter egg Groot toy cameos from Funko, Jakks Pacific, Hasbro and KIDdesigns — all of which can be utilized as props for the unsuspicious dance set-up. These along with other Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2 merchandise are available now at major retailers and the Disney Store.

"I've been a Marvel fan my whole life, so working on the #GrootDancebomb challenge was a dream come true," said D-trix. "I found inspiration in Groot's personality and the fun dance moves featured in the toys. I'm excited to share the #GrootDancebomb challenge with fans around the world and hope to inspire others to join the movement."

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Next up for Marvel is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
