SPOILERS for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Follow

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened in theaters this weekend and brought all of the fun that fans of the first Guardians of the Galaxy were expecting. What fans of the first Guardians of the Galaxy probably weren't expecting was how bittersweet the ending was.

The major theme of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was family. A major part of that was Peter Quill meeting his biological father, Ego, who turned out to be a villainous Celestial who murdered Peter's mother. That relationship was contrasted with Peter's relationship with Yondu, who kidnapped Peter from Earth but then raised the boy into adulthood rather than turn him over to Ego. In the end, Yondu sacrifices his life to save Peter's, who he sees as his son.

"I didn't want that to be the ending, and I kind of refused to put that in as the ending for a long time. It wasn't how the movie ended," writer/director James Gunn told Uproxx. "But, at the end of the day, I knew that's where it needed to go. I knew that we need to have real stakes in these movies. We need to lose characters. And not everyone who sees Marvel movies loves that."

So far, fans and critics alike seem to be loving the film, and Yondu may have even stolen the show.
