Marvel Studios is celebrating yet another successful opening thanks to the James Gunn's latest universe-saving adventure, but the high stakes and gratuitous cameos aren't the only things that had people packing theaters.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 builds off of the successes of the first film by continuing to explore the wonderful dynamics between its core cast members. And though Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, and Vin Diesel were all big actors before they appeared in the first box office smash, the other two key characters were filled by somewhat unknowns at the time.

Chris Pratt had a successful role in Zero Dark Thirty while playing fan-favorite character Andy in Parks & Recreation, while Dave Bautista had already earned some buzz as a popular pro wrestler. But casting them as leads in a Marvel movie was a risky decision at the time.

The gamble paid off, but Marvel had clear indication that it would work when the two actors performed their screen test for the first film, which has begun making the rounds yet again in the wake of Vol. 2's box office success.

The screen test shows that the eventual Star-Lord and Drax had great chemistry from the onset, including perfect comedic timing.

They two act out the scene in which they first encounter each other and Peter Quill has to buy some time for Gamora, whom Drax wants to kill due to her relationship with Ronan and Thanos.

It's an interesting glimpse into the process that filmmakers go through when selecting lead roles in a potential franchise and shows that ability and projection are key aspects. Bautista has since transitioned into being a diversified and talented actor, while Pratt has settled into 'leading role' material rather well.
