Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Global Opening Set To Break First Film's Record

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe dominating the box office, all eyes are on Marvel Studio's newest output - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Seeing as the franchise has become beloved by fans since the first film's 2014 release, it would be expected for the sequel to perform just as well, particularly in the overseas market.

But according to a report from Deadline, Vol. 2 will not only match the global record set by its predecessor - it just might surpass it.

With the film already beginning to debut overseas - hitting 37 markets through this Friday - industry estimates are predicting that the film will have an international debut between $85 and $100 million. To contrast, the first Guardians earned $67.4 million overseas, which would equal about $65 million in today's industry, and went on to earn a total of $773+ million worldwide.

While this certainly wouldn't be the biggest overseas Marvel debut - that honor goes to Iron Man 3, which earned a current equivalent of $141.4 million - it certainly is a good sign of Vol 2's success. Domestically, the film is expected to earn between $130 and $150 million opening weekend when it premieres the following week.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters May 5.

The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
