Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Makes Over $700 Million Worldwide

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may have been knocked off from the top spot at the box office by Alien: Covenant this weekend but the Marvel Studios film still have plenty of reason to celebrate.

The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel topped $700 million worldwide over the weekend.

Domestically, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hauled in $35 million (a 46% drop from the previous weekend), bringing the domestic total up to $301.8 million. Internationally, the film has garnished $430.8 million, marking the total box office take for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at $732.6 million.

The winner at the box office this weekend was Alien: Covenant. Ridley Scott's new film took in an estimated $36 million. Both films are trailed by Everything, Everything, which nabbed $12 million, Amy Schumer's Snatched with $7.6 million, and the Fast & Furious franchise continues to flourish, adding another $10 million to its total run globally, currently parked at $1.212 billion.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has already topped several Marvel Studios productions, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $715 million, Thor: The Dark World's $645 million, Doctor Strange at $635 million, and Iron Man 2, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
