While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lost the top spot at the box office this weekend, it did reach a significant milestone. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has crossed $300 million at the domestic box office.

To put that into perspective, the original Guardians of the Galaxy earned $3.33 million domestic in its entire theatrical run. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is closing in on that total after just three weeks.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened to $145 million domestically on the first weekend of May. The film is performing well worldwide, earning $63 million worldwide to bring its global total to $732 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 pushed the Marvel Cinematic Universe's lifetime box office total over the $11 billion mark.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lost the top spot at the box office to Alien: Covenant this weekend, though a surprising Saturday surge for Guardians and a slump for Alien made that showdown closer than expected. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earned $35 over its third weekend, which is very close to the $36 million earned by Alien: Covenant in its opening weekend. This suggests that Guardians may reclaim the top spot next week when Alien suffers the usual second-week dropoff.
