Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer Gives Fans Their First Look at Ego

Kurt Russell made his debut as Ego, the Living Planet in the closing moments of the latest trailer for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The veteran actor's entrance was, as far as we can tell, the first time the Guardians will have met his character onscreen, and it's a moment that fans at Comic Con International: San Diego got to experience in a sizzle reel last summer.
In the final moments of the trailer, Russell's character emerges from a doorway and introduces himself as Peter Quill's long-lost father, whose identity and very nature was a mystery at the heart of the fist Guardians of the Galaxy.
Fans know that Russell is playing Ego, in the comics known as Ego the Living Planet. Sentient and malevolent, and possessing extremely powerful psionic powers, Ego moves through the universe like a fierce and destructive force of nature, doing battle with many of Marvel's cosmic protectors and other science-based heroes like the Fantastic Four.
Russell will be playing the human form of Ego, who has taken on a physical form to experience what it's like to be human. While that might be the case for the majority of the film, you can't help but wonder if Gunn will have him appear in his natural form at some point.
When Russell was first announced as joining the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 cast, most presumed he was playing Star-Lord's father. Rumors that he would play Ego started to circulate, but few guessed that the two would be one and the same.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Kurt Russell.
