Marvel Boss On How Fox-Owned Characters Can Appear In The MCU

Marvel Studios deal with FOX regarding shared properties has always been a bit murky to the fans. People are curious what the specific restrictions are for characters who have appeared in Fantastic Four and X-Men comics as well as the Avengers.

How can Quicksilver be in the Avengers AND X-Men movies? Who owns the rights to the Kree? Will Galactus show up in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie?

While both sides have been coy about the rights to specific characters and the exact nature of the deal, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 tended to blow the lid off when it featured cameos from many characters thought to be off limits to the Marvel Studios side of movies.

In a discussion with SlashFilm, Marvel honcho Kevin Feige revealed some key details behind the deal and how they are able to feature certain characters thought to belong to Fox.

"There's joint custody with a number of things," Feige said when talking about the deal. "There are certain characters that they have, but races that we share. If that makes sense?"

Marvel Studios gets to share The Watchers and the Skrulls—characters who first appeared in the Fantastic Four comics—with Fox, given their prevalence in many Marvel comics.

At first it was assumed that Marvel did not have the rights to the Skrulls given the use of the Chitauri in the first Avengers movie. But that's not exactly true. Perhaps they understand the significance of the Skruls—and, by extension, the Kree—which is why they're slowly building toward a storyline they could eventually use as the basis of another big event film.

Who wouldn't want to see Secret Invasion or the Kree-Skrull War on the big screen?

The question, really, is which specific character—not race—belongs to each studio. Marvel, for example, cannot use the Super Skrull because that character is a Fantastic Four villain. So what about Uatu the Watcher?
