Guardians Director Jokingly Reveals He Doesn't Have Sex With Raccoons

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has a special place in his heart for the lovable cast, including Rocket Raccoon. That said, he does want to clarify that "love" part just a bit.

In a directors roundtable with GQ, Gunn recalled when he was first offered the Guardians of the Galaxy project by Marvel. His enthusiasm for the project is infectious, saying "I went down there, and I was like, 'Oh s***. I was f****** created in a laboratory to create this type of movie: I love f****** raccoons, I love space operas, and I love comic books.' It was what I was made to do."

If you read that quickly without one particularly important pause, you might get the wrong idea. That's what Baby Driver director Edgar Wright pointed out, saying "'I love f****** raccoons is not going to look good in print."

Gunn took the opportunity to clear that up, saying "I have never actually f***** a raccoon. I swear."

With the whole Raccoon thing settled, Gunn revealed that before Guardians he was on the verge of walking away from the business.

"Two weeks before I got Guardians of the Galaxy, I called up my agent and I quit film directing," said Gunn. "I'm like, "I want to be relevant." You know? "The only thing people are going to see are Marvel movies, and nobody's gonna give me a Marvel movie." And it was two weeks later that I got the call that "Hey, come in and talk to us about doing Guardians."

Luckily for fans, he did not walk away, and Gunn will return for a third time at the helm of Guardians to complete his trilogy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits home video soon, while Spider-Man: Homecoming is in theaters now. That will be followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
