Hugh Jackman Originally Wanted A Very Different Logan Ending

There's no denying the appeal of Logan. The gritty superhero dove into theaters earlier this month and has racked up millions of fans. The R-rated venture gave a proper farewell to Hugh Jackman's take on Wolverine, and longtime fans left cinemas bereft thanks to the star's heart-wrenching exit. The unapologetic, ragged movie explored the darkest parts of Wolverine's life and gave the X-Men icon peace after being on the run for so long.

Now, fans should take a moment and see if they can reimagine a different ending to Logan. The film has been out for a bit now, and the task may be difficult for some. But, for Hugh Jackman, the star originally wanted to see the movie ended in a much different way.

Speaking to Yahoo, the Australian star admitted Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven really inspired his work on Logan. The dark western sees Eastwood play a retired mercenary. However, towards the film's end, the lead winds up revisiting his bloody past and must live with the consequences of his actions. For Jackman, the actor felt that Wolverine should follow in Eastwood's footsteps in that regard.

"It was always floated that Logan would possibly die," Jackman recalled. "I said, 'Let's be open, because it may be more powerful for him not to die."

However, it seems like Jackman is a fan of Logan's theatrical closing. Director James Mangold was able to convince the actor that Wolverine needed a more permanent end.

"James was always certain of that ending, and he was right," Jackman continued. "What's most poignant for someone who is thought to be indestructible is him dying while saying, 'This is what it feels like.'"

Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
