Iain De Caestecker On How LMDs Will Effect Agents Of SHIELD

01/10/2017 05:28 pm EST

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD returns tonight and begins a new story, "LMD." The story sees a humanoid android called Aida gain sentience after reading the mystical tome called the Darkhold.

The original LMD was conceived of by Dr. Holden Radcliffe, but he had help in completing the project. That help came from Agent Leo Fitz of SHIELD, and actor Iain de Caestecker shared some thoughts on what the coming of the life model decoys means for Agents of SHIELD.

"They've created this thing with the purest intentions of it being a force for good," de Caestecker says. "It's not even a weapon. It's supposed to be a shield. I think they've approached it from quite a mathematical point of view, and there will come a point when their emotions become involved in it, where they've made this thing so real that seeing it experience pain or whatever is going to be a pretty horrifying thing to know that they created that in something and let that happen."

The LMD story arc begins in tonight's midseason premiere episode, "Broken Promises."
