James Gunn Shares New Comments About Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

It's becoming a common practice for big-budget franchises to shoot sequel films back to back. Avengers is doing it, Justice League was supposed to, and the fabled Avatar films from James Cameron will be filming a whopping four movies at once.

So it's only natural for people to wonder about plans for the NEXT film just as one is gearing up for theaters. Especially when that movie is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, currently the 3rd Most Anticipated Film by ComicBook.com users.

But, please, just don't talk to James Gunn about Guardians 3 just yet.

While speaking with Fandango, the director was inevitably asked about plans for a third film in the series.

"People are obsessed about the third one and they haven't even seen the second one yet!" Gunn said. "What if they all hate the second one? Then they're not going to be so obsessed anymore."

Gunn elaborated on how that mentality doesn't even relate to the theme of his film.

"It's all about what's in the future; it's never about what we have right now. I think if anything, this Guardians is about what they are in this moment – and I think that's what it's been like for me working on the movie. It really isn't about thinking down the road and how can we make something great someday – it's how can we make something great right now in this moment that will affect people's lives for the better. That's what Vol. 2 is."

Then when asked point blank if he's planning to direct a third film, he nipped any sort of speculation right in the bud.

"Listen, we're figuring it all out," Gunn said. "We'll know soon. Let me take a couple of breaths before I say what I'm going to do next."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters May 5.
