James Mangold Says Logan Tried Very Hard To Give Hugh Jackman's Wolverine An End

Logan is the swan song for the man who's occupied the role of Wolverine for the character's entire film lifespan Hugh Jackman. That obviously adds some pressure to director James Mangold's task of delivering a film that can bring this long-running narrative to some sort of closure.

While fans are curious about how Mangold will wrap up this final Hugh Jackman entry, the director is focused on delivering a complete experience, and not just an extended epilogue. The director recently spoke to Fandango about the expectations for Logan, and whether fans will view this as the Wolverine film they've always wanted.

"I hope so. Ya know, I can't please everybody because there are so many aspirations people want for these movies. But I think the one that I share and that is universal is the desire to see the intensity, the darkness and the adult nature of the Wolverine character. Much of the Marvel library is full of adult characters with adult themes that don't always get to be explored because they're making four-box movies for children as well. I think we're making it very clear that we're making a grown-up movie."

When asked if this will effectively end Jackman's run of the character, Mangold leaves the possibilities for offshoots open but does think they delivered a true ending for Jackman. "There's always a way to tell more stories, but the fact is we worked very hard to craft a tale that makes you feel like like this is the end and that we've said what needs to be said."

"In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces."

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
