The positive word of mouth that James Mangold's Logan is receiving seems to be working in its favor, as the film had a fantastic Tuesday in theaters.

Logan (which currently holds a 88.53 on ComicBook.com's composite rankings) actually bettered it's Monday numbers by 19%, pulling in another $8.6 million to push the film past the $100 million mark (specifically $104 million). Paired with the worldwide numbers ($159 million) it helped the Wolverine franchise as a whole sail past the $1 billion milestone (via Deadline).

This high octane start has led some to estimate Logan could fend off Kong: Skull Island in its debut week, a film that has received decidedly mixed reviews. Even if it doesn't beat Kong, Logan ranks fourth on the all-time top grossing Tuesdays in March list, behind Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice ($12.1), The Hunger Games ($10.3), and The Passion Of The Christ ($9.2).

Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
