Logan Producers On Whether Wolverine Will Star In Other X-Men Films

Hugh Jackman and James Mangold's send off to the Best There Is At What He Does releases in theaters worldwide today. And despite this being the final Wolverine story from this particular partnership—and Jackman's 17-year-long tenure—there's a sense of wondering what's next.

But apparently, the producers behind the X-Men franchise are waiting to ask that question.

Speaking with JoBlo about Logan, producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker revealed they're not ready to figure out the next steps, especially since this is intended to cap off a particular era for Jackman as Wolverine.

"We haven't started talking about [rebooting Wolverine]," Kinberg revealed.

"The truth is, we really approached this as, this is really the end of Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine and it could very well be the end of Wolverine in the movies. Beyond that, we'll figure out if there is some other version of him. We haven't gone down that road. We really approached this as if it were the end."

Parker added that he agreed with Kinberg.

"And truly, we are literally just finishing with this so, candidly," Parker said, "it has not been a process where there has been a lot of downtime from production into post, post into visual effects and scoring and all that stuff. It was not long ago we were in that dark room."

The two producers also said previously in their discussion that whenever they're making these movies, a natural conversation occurs about what will happen next. They specifically mentioned that Logan was in early discussion going back to the days of making The Wolverine.

That they're denying having the conversations almost seems out of respect for Jackman, Mangold, and Logan as a singular movie itself, so they do not detract from the film's impact.

"The whole focus of the last however many years was living up to Hugh's desire and Jim's intention on delivering on a final Wolverine film for Hugh on a different, unique story that would try to carry the day more on the emotionality and the reality than on visual effects or action," Parker said. "Pretty much the whole focus has been on that."

When asked whether X-23 could take up that mantle, Parker acknowledged it being in the cards.

"We have been talking a little bit about that and the possibility certainly exists," Parker said. "She's a remarkable actress, I think she did an amazing job, and a lot of the credit for that goes to [Mangold]. It's certainly a rich opportunity, we haven't gotten specific in any way, but I'd love to see more with that character."

Maybe Cable can take her back to the past so she can hang out with the new generation of X-Men introduced in Apocalypse. It wouldn't be the weirdest timeline shenanigan occurring in an X-film!

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
