The Surprise X-Force Character That Debuted in Logan

Logan just hit theaters and will mark the end of Hugh Jackman's long run as Wolverine in the X-Men movies franchise.

As one chapter ends, another begins. Deadpool 2 will soon enter production and an X-Force movie is expected to follow.

With that in mind, some fans may not have expected a certain X-Force character to show up in Logan, and especially not in the way he did.

Spoilers for Logan follow.

Logan is actually a movie packed with X-Force characters. Wolverine led and iteration of X-Force which included X-23 on the team, and Caliban was a member of Cable's X-Force and Cyclops' proto-X-Force tracking squad.

Those characters were all known to be appearing in Logan, of course. The character fans weren't expecting to see was Rictor. In Logan, Rictor is a mutant created in the same program as X-23, but he has a very different history in the Marvel Comics Universe.

In Marvel Comics, Julio Richter was a born a mutant to human parents. Rictor was captured and forced to use his seismic powers by the anti-mutant organization known as the Right. He was rescued by X-Factor and taken in as their ward and trainee.

After the destruction of Xavier's Mansion and Magneto's defection to the Hellfire Club, the New Mutants were also taken in by X-Factor. Rictor became part of the New Mutants group but left when Cable took over mentoring the team because he believed Cable had murdered his father. When Rictor learned that it was actually Stryfe, Cable's clone, who was responsible for the murder he rejoined his friends, who had by then become the paramilitary squad called X-Force.

The Rictor of Logan shares the same seismic powers as his comic book counterpart. His origin is different, but the idea of him being a young mutant used for sinister purposes is still present. Fans probably shouldn't expect the young actor from Logan to reprise his role in the X-Force movie, but it's one more X-Force character in the film universe's continuity.

Logan currently has an 88.61 ComicBook Composite score, the second-highest ComicBook Composite score of any comic book movie, and a 4.75 out of 5 user rating, making it the top rated of all comic book movies among ComicBook.com readers. Let us know what you thought of Logan by rating it below.
