Marvel's The Defenders: Sigourney Weaver Calls Her Character A 'Renaissance Woman'

In just a matter of months, Netflix will be bringing a new kind of superhero team into the world. While the Avengers take on villains on the big screen, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will usher in a new squad to serve the streets of New York in Marvel's The Defenders. The miniseries will see the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist team up to take on a shadowy villain played by Sigourney Weaver.

Fans are no doubt excited to see Weaver join the MCU, but details about the star's role has been kept on the down-low. Aside from her villainous origins, fans don't know much at all about the role which Weaver signed on for - but that is starting to change. Recently, the actress spoke with Nerdist and skirted around the top of The Defenders before finally giving up a few descriptions of her character.

"I do think she's a renaissance woman," Weaver eventually admitted. "I think yes, she has to do these things but she really… she loves life, she loves culture. It's one of the most interesting women characters I've ever read."

In the past, other creatives involved with The Defenders have mirrored similar statements about Weaver's character Alexandra. Costume designer Stephanie Malansky said the villain is elegant and carries a regal feel.

"I'd say very elegant, very beautiful," Maslansky said about Alexandra during a chat with IBT. "I had so much fun designing her wardrobe. It was very, possibly even in a way, grounded in an older world. Maybe very, in a way, European. More of a global feeling to her wardrobe, very lush."

Even the series' showrunner has said that Alexandra is the kind of high-class baddie which all heroes should fear. Marco Ramirez has previously described Weaver's role as one whose "sophisticated, intellectual, and dangerous."

Obviously, that kind of frou-frou history isn't going to mesh well with the Defenders. The vigilantes all come from the streets of New York and revel in their seedy backgrounds. Jessica Jones will most definitely take issue with Alexandra's taste, so the villain will want to watch her back. After all, Jessica does have a pretty mean right hook.

Marvel's The Defenders is developed by Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez. The miniseries will also feature Sigourney Weaver as the villain, Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver), and several recurring guest stars from Marvel's Daredevil, Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage, and Marvel's Iron Fist, including Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, Scott Glenn as Stick, Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, and Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing.

The Defenders premieres on Netflix August 18.
