Russo Brothers Reveal Their Fake Title For Avengers 4

The formerly titled Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 fourth installment to the Avengers franchise is in need of a new title. While many are hoping to see the cosmic theme set by 2018's Avengers: Infinity War continued with the 2019 sequel, but we may all need to be a bit apprehensive for when the title card rolls out for the first time.

The directing Russo Brothers are ready for an epic misdirect with the title of the fourth Marvel Studios film.

"How about Avengers 4: Great Lakes Avengers?" Joe Russo jokes after being asked what his fake title would be for the film and an assist from brother Anthony.

The whole fake title thing began in October of 2014 when Marvel Studios rolled out their slate of movies through 2019. While the screen revealed all of the upcoming film titles, Captain America: Civil War's had not only a fake title but logo art to go with it, leaving the immediate impression of the third Cap movie being titled Captain America: Serpent Society.

"It was Kevin [Feige]'s idea," Joe Russo is quick to point out when asked who was behind the misdirecting. "Certainly when we go through our process, when we're starting to talk about what's next, I'm sure there's probably a list of famous Captain America titles that are distributed to us and [writers Christopher]Markus and [Stephen] McFeely just keep it as a reference, because Civil War is something I've been talking about for a while, and so as we're deciding which direction to push him, we consider everything, because maybe there's a combination of stories that'll work. I think Serpent Society was probably on that list and Kevin thought it would be a humorous misdirect for the crowd."

While a Serpent Society movie was ruled out when Marvel revealed the real Captain America 3 title moments later, we can still fantasize about a Great Lakes Avengers movie before realizing how implausible it would be by 2019. The characters are largely obscure in the Marvel Universe, often serving as a sidekick group to the headliner Avengers. The group was formed by Mr. Immortal who realized that his ability to survive just about anything wasn't enough to accomplish his heroic missions on his own. He quickly assembled Dinah Soar, Big Bertha, Flatman and Doorman only to be discovered (and later mentored) by Hawkeye and Mockingbird, the only characters mentioned in this entire piece who exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, new members such as Squirrel Girl, Monkey Joe, Grasshopper and Deadpool among others join the Great Lakes Avengers at various points in Marvel Comics. Maybe one day.

Captain America: Civil War will be available for digital download on September 2 and on blu-ray/DVD on September 13.
