Sherlock Season 4 Finale Title Revealed

In less than a month, fans of Sherlock will be welcomed back to 221B Baker Street thanks to the BBC. The critically acclaimed series is slated to roll out Season 4 come New Years, and the network is getting fans hyped for the occasion. To do just that, the official Sherlock Facebook has gifted fans with a neat surprise that's sure to spark tons of theories. The BBC has finally revealed the title of Sherlock's Season 4 finale.

The third episode of Season 4 will be called "The Final Problem," and fans are already grasping for clues as to what the name means. Taking after Holmes, fans are using their sleuthing skills to plot out how the finale might pan out, but there does seem to be one intriguing connection between "The Final Problem" and previous Sherlock lore.

Fans will undoubtedly remember the heart-wrenching episode that was "The Reichenbach Fall." Back in Season 2, fans were left in tears after Sherlock was forced to commit suicide alongside the villain Moriarty in order to save his loved ones. Of course, fans know now that the death was faked thanks to Molly Hooper, but the episode still haunts them because of a few particular lines.

On such line is uttered by Moriarty. The psychopath tells Sherlock, "Oh, that's the problem — the final problem. Have you worked what it is yet?" When the consulting detective remains quiet, Moriarty tsks, saying, "I did tell you, but did you listen? How hard do you find it, having to say, "I don't know?"

The dialogue was shared over a cup of tea, and the scene saw Moriarty descend into a whole new level of madness. Unsurprisingly, fans think the conversation will be revisited in the Season 4 finale as the encounter never had closure.

So far, the theory seems entirely plausible. When Season 3 of Sherlock came to an end, fans were left immobilized by the finale's abrupt cliffhanger. Sherlock, after being sentenced to exile, found himself returned to the United Kingdom after Moriarty had allegedly returned. A video loop of the villain asking, "Did you miss me?" plagued the country, but Sherlock felt confident Moriarty had not actually returned after the series' recent holiday special.

But just because Moriarty is dead doesn't mean he's not a threat.

Season 4 of Sherlock is set to introduce a new villain who has been called the most terrifying to date. If the new baddie has any sort of connection to Moriarty, he might have the answer to Sherlock's final problem - and fans may finally learn its answer later next year.

Sherlock Series 4 debuts on New Year's Day, Jan. 1 2016 on the BBC. Sherlock airs as part of PBS' Masterpiece in the United States.
