First Spider-Man Movie Costume Going Up For Auction

Before Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, or Tobey Maguire, Peter Hammond was the first Spider-Man in a live-action film. Now Spider-Man fans will have the opportunity to own a unique artifact from the character's cinematic history.

The Spider-Man costume created for the 1977 Spider-Man movie is to be auctioned off on May 25, 2017, by Nate D. Sanders Auctions. The costume was the first ever Spider-Man costume used in a live-action film.

The 1977 Spider-Man movie from Columbia Pictures starred Peter Hammond as Peter Parker, a.ka. Spider-Man. The film also doubled as the pilot episode for The Amazing Spider-Man live-action CBS television series that ran from 1977 through 1979. The costume being auction was used for both the film and the television series.

The costume was also used to promote director Tobe Hooper's 1985 Spider-Man film for Cannon Pictures. Cannon Pictures acquired the rights from Marvel for $225,000, but the film was never produced. The film would have starred Tom Cruise as Peter Parker, Bob Hoskins as Dr. Octopus and Lauren Bacall as Aunt May. Hooper left the project after a few months in pre-production. Joseph Zito was hired as the new director and chose Scott Leva to play Peter Parker, but Cannon Pictures ran into financial troubles and scrapped the project in 1986.

The costume is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Scott Leva. Leva writes, ''the Spider-Man Costume...is, in fact, an original costume originally designed for use on the 'SPIDER-MAN' TV series for CBS in 1977.''

Photos of the Spider-Man suit can be seen in the gallery below. More details about the auction can be found at the auctioneer's website.

Spider-Man will next return to film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
