Spider-Man: Homecoming Blows Away Preview Night Projections

Already expecting to be a massive haul in the opening weekend box office, Spider-Man: Homecoming finished Thursday ahead of projections with a $15.4 million rake on preview night.

By comparison to other Marvel Studios films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Doctor Strange, each earned between $9 million and $11 million on their preview nights in recent years. The opening for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took home an $8.7 million gate when it opened in 2014.

Crossing over to DC Films, Wonder Woman opened to $11 million gate just last month.

Homecoming was projected to earn anywhere from $85 million to $110 million during its opening weekend. The film will be showing in 4,341 North American locations, with almost 400 showing it in IMAX. With a projected international pull of between $90 and $120 million, the film is likely to open with about $200 million at the global box office.

Starting with a $15.4 million opening could push that number much higher as reviews have been overwhelmingly positive for the film.

Homecoming marks the biggest collaboration yet between Sony and Marvel Studios, putting it in a unique position for comparisons. Although Sony has brought in higher earnings with its previous Spider-Man installments - particularly Spider-Man 3's opening gross of $151 million - this new prediction places it about on par with many other MCU outputs.

Franchise-establishing films such as Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxyopened to $95-100 million earnings, something that Homecoming could easily achieve as well. Fans will just have to wait and see exactly how much money the film brings in this weekend.
