Spider-Man: Homecoming - What Could Captain America's New Shield Be?

07/08/2017 04:26 pm EDT

Captain America: Civil War ended in Steve Rogers laying his iconic shield on the ground, and the shield is once again referenced in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Spoilers incoming for Spider-Man: Homecoming, so if you haven't seen it yet you've been warned.

During one of the multiple conversations between Peter and Happy Hogan, Hogan mentions that he is overseeing the move from Stark Tower to the new Avengers Headquarters. During that conversation, he makes an aside about loading up Captain America's shield, which means that Rogers has not retrieved his iconic weapon yet.

Homecoming takes place a few months after Civil War, so Cap's going to need a new shield. Being that he is now in Wakanda, the possibilities are endless, but there are two scenarios more likely than the others. The first is an energy based shield, more specifically a photon shield. He used one previously in the comics, and it could mimic the size and shape of his previous shield.

It could also fire off energy blasts, and he could manipulate it to be any type of weapon he wanted, though he often used the shield version. As an energy shield, it will be nowhere near as indestructible as his original Vibranium shield, but he can conjure it at any time, so he doesn't have to worry about losing it.

The second possible (and more likely) scenario will be Rogers getting a shield like he has in the current comics. The shield is based style wise on his original angular shield, but with some modern amenities. Since the shield comes to a natural point, it features a powerful energy blade that can be switched on and off. It allows Rogers to cut through most metals as well as deal lethal blows to those who get in his way.

In addition to the blade, the shield can be split in half, allowing him to wield a piece of it on both arms. It can quickly be reassembled with a simple snap, giving him some flexibility in fights.

Being that he is in Wakanda, both of these are possible, but that last one would give him a new design that fits his recent outlaw status in the films.

Most fans figure he will get his original shield back at some point, but in the meantime might as well have some fun with it, right?
