Spider-Man: Homecoming Will Feature An Avengers Flashback Scene

With Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are set to show an aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has yet to be seen on screen, and it all begins with a flashback to the Battle of New York.

After the Avengers' climactic battle with Loki and the invading Chitauri forces, New York City was nearly devastated and suffered a lot of catastrophic damages. Hey, that'll happen when a giant space worm rampages between buildings.

And the opening scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to show how a regular person was affected by those events—specifically, how it uprooted Adrian Toomes' own life and sent him down the dark path of villainy.

As reported by Heroic Hollywood, Michael Keaton's character and his construction crew arrive at Stark Tower in those opening scenes in an attempt to clean up and repair the damage. But then Damage Control, bankrolled by Tony Stark, puts him out of business as they're in charge of the cleanup project. It seems like, with all of the alien tech littered throughout the city, Stark and the federal government don't want to endanger—and don't trust—working class citizens to the potential perils of dangerous weaponry.

But that just causes Toomes to steal what he can find out of the Chitauri debris. It also fosters a vendetta against Stark, which motivates Toomes' efforts to become the villainous Vulture.

Marvel's bad guys have been typically one note in their approach, wanting little more than world domination or vengeance in their quests to kill a lot of people. Sure, there might be hints of different motivations in certain actors' nuanced portrayals, but generally they're all fist-clenching "I MUST DESTROY YOU" types of affairs.

It's nice to see the filmmakers behind Homecoming explore the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and dwell in an event that already occurred, while creating a compelling backstory for Spider-Man's first major villain. Item 47, the Marvel One-Shot short film, explored this topic briefly when a couple of criminals stumble upon a discarded Chitauri blaster.

We'll see how it all pans out when Spider-Man: Homecoming releases in theaters July 7.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The cast features Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Logan Marshall-Green, and Marisa Tomei.

The film is being directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), based on a screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (Vacation reboot) and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers.
