Spider-Man: Homecoming - Is This An Avengers: Age of Ultron Connection?

In the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, when Donald Glover (Community) briefly-appears, you can see him standing just off to the side of Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus) — who is holding a high-tech weapon. Marshall-Green aims the weapon at a target, pulls the trigger, and shoots a powerful beam of some sort. We then see, after the beam hit its target, a firey explosion in a wooded area.

While most people have focused on Glover in this scene, others are more interested in the unknown weapon. Why? Because if you look closely at the front of the weapon, you'll notice that it appears to be a robotic-like hand opening up after Marshall-Green pulls the trigger.

Whoa! What could that be? Some have speculated that it could be Chitauri weaponry left behind and modified after the Avengers defeated them in the Battle of New York. Could it be? Maybe. Spider-Man calls New York home, so it would make sense for Chitauri technology to appear in the film to provide another MCU connection. However, as we saw in the Item 47 one-shot, the Chitauri Gun is fine as is; there is no need or reason to modify it like the Homecoming weapon.

On second thought: You could make the case that it is a Chitauri-based weapon that was produced by Hammer Industries. In Netflix's Luke Cage, Hammer Industries built firearms and ammunition from salavaged Chitauri metal.

Or, it could be from Hammer Industries and completely unrelated to Chitauri technology. Hammer Industries is always copying Stark Industries, so it could be making another weapon that resembles Iron Man's hand and repulsor beam. Obviously, that angle would also make sense because Iron Man/Tony Stark is appearing in the film.

Okay, so what else could it be? Reddit's TheAluminumMan pointed out that the weapon could be a salvaged arm of an Ultron Sentry. In The Avengers sequel, Ultron created an army of artificially-intelligent robots that he could simultaneously control and was able move his consciousness into them in a split-second. While Ultron Sentries couldn't shoot concussive beams from their fingers like Ultron could, they could transform their arms into cannons. Sokovia (where they were defeated) is wicked far from NY, but Sentry-tech could easily end up there. Plus, since Tony Stark is responsible for the creation of Ultron, it would also make for a nice connection to the MCU.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The cast features Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, with Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.. It also includes Jon Favreau, Martin Starr, Kenneth Choi, Michael Mando, Selenis Leyva, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., JJ Totah, Hannibal Buress, and Jacob Batalon.

The film is being directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), based on a screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (Vacation reboot) and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers.

The film is produced by Marvel boss Kevin Feige and former Sony boss Amy Pascal. Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Patricia Whitcher, Jeremy Latcham, and Stan Lee are serving as Executive Producers.

Doctor Strange is now in theaters; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man: Homecoming – July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; Avengers: Infinity War – May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp – July 6, 2018; and Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7, 2017.
