Spider-Man: Homecoming May Pull Out $200 Million Global Opening

Spider-Man: Homecoming may open with over $200 million at the global box office this weekend.

As the size and significance of the international market steadily grows, it has become increasingly common for major American blockbusters to open with similar (sometimes larger) box office hauls overseas than in North America.

The release, Spider-Man's first solo film since 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the second Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance for the character, swings into theaters on Friday (with preview screenings on Thursday night).

While fans have expressed weariness at yet another Spider-reboot, early industry tracking indicates that the franchise will deliver at the box office, with the domestic box office projected to be between $85 million and $110 million.

Deadline reports that overseas estimates have Spider-Man: Homecoming tracking for a $90–$110M opening, meaning that as long as the movie performs at least in the middle of projections both at home and abroad, it should open close to $200 million. A strong opening-weekend box office could eclipse it with room to spare.

The film will be showing in 4,341 North American locations, with almost 400 showing it in IMAX.

This projection is about on par with earlier reports, which predicted that the film would gross $90-100 in its debut weekend.

Homecoming marks the biggest collaboration yet between Sony and Marvel Studios, putting it in a unique position for comparisons. Although Sony has brought in higher earnings with its previous Spider-Man installments - particularly Spider-Man 3's opening gross of $151 million - this new prediction places it about on par with many other MCU outputs.

Franchise-establishing films such as Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy opened to $95-100 million earnings at the domestic box office, with Guardians doing better than Iron Man at the international box office partly because of the changing economics of the film industry.

Spider-Man: Homecoming premieres in theaters July 7.
