Spider-Man: Homecoming Rumor Regarding Zendaya's Character Debunked

06/12/2017 09:11 pm EDT

There are plenty of things Marvel fans are looking forward to with Spider-Man: Homecoming, and one of them has to do with a character's identity. Netizens are dying to learn whether Zendaya's role in the film has greater ties to the comic book world, and fans thought they got an answer to that question last week. However, according to one source, it looks like the Spider-Man character's leaked identity was a bit premature.

The debacle all began when netizens began getting their hands on copies of Spider-Man: Homecoming's novelization. Tumblr and Reddit users began sharing details of the book, and one person reported that Zendaya's character had the last name Toomes. The name Michelle Toomes suggested she was related to the film's baddie Vulture.

However, those claims are now being pushed back upon.

According to new reports from Tumblr and Reddit users, the Spider-Man: Homecoming novelization does not reveal Michelle's last name. ComicBook has not be able to independently verify the new reports, but enough fans online are walking back from the statement to note the evidence. Tumblr user @SpiderHolland previously shared information which proved they had the novel, and the account confirmed Michelle wasn't given a last name either.

In the past, Marvel fans have had their theories about Michelle's identity shot down. The character was initially thought to be Mary Jane Watson, but Zendaya said her character was Michelle and just that. Still, fans continue to speculate the name may be a cover. Given Zendaya's fame, many find it difficult to believe the singer would be cast in a non-canon Spider-Man role, but the MCU has scouted talent for such roles before. Pepper Potts was not known to the general public before Gwyneth Paltrow took on the character in Iron Man.

For now, fans will have to wait and see just how Michelle fits into Spider-Man: Homecoming. The highly anticipated film is slated to hit theaters in less than a month, so news about the role will surely trickle in as the weeks pass by.
