Thor: Ragnarok: The Fate Of Thor's Hammer Revealed

04/10/2017 09:41 am EDT

Today, Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, the third Thor solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new trailer provides the answer to a question many Thor fans were asking about the new movie.

While this is the first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel Studios did previously release some photos from the film and the cast has done some interviews with the press. One thing that stood out was that Thor was not wielding his hammer, Mjolnir. Instead, he was equipped with an ax, which may or may not be Jarnbjorn, the enchanted ax Thor favored in the Marvel Comics universe before becoming worthy of Mjolnir.

But if Thor is wielding an ax in Thor: Ragnarok, what happened to the hammer? The trailer reveals the answer by showing an encounter between Thor and Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death and ruler of the underworld realm of Hel. The scene shows Thor hurling Mjolnir at Hel and Hela stopping it with one hand in a true "unstoppable force meets immovable object" moment.

Things get worse for Thor as Hel then, with barely a flex, crushes Mjolnir in her hand and the Uru metal it is made of scatters.

This is a different answer than many fans were expecting. Some thought that with Thor currently unworthy of Mjolnir in the Marvel Comics universe, the same fate would befall him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It turns out that something perhaps even worse occurs. Mjolnir has been damaged or destroyed in Marvel Comics stories in the past, but this seems like it could be of an entirely larger magnitude.

In Thor: Ragnarok currently a 4.11 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating, making it the seventh most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com readers.
